How to Develop a Strong Research Question

A strong question gives your study direction. Learn how to move from a broad interest to a focused question that is clear, researchable and worth answering.

A research question is more than a sentence at the beginning of a proposal. It is the organising centre of a study: it shapes what evidence you need, which methods make sense and what kind of contribution you can reasonably make.

Why the question matters

When a question is too broad, the study tends to become difficult to design and even harder to complete. When it is too narrow, it may produce an answer with little relevance beyond a very specific setting. The goal is not to find the most impressive wording. It is to identify a question that is meaningful, focused and answerable with the time and resources available.

A useful question also creates alignment. The problem statement explains why the question needs to be asked; the research design explains how it will be answered; and the analysis returns directly to what the question requires.

A useful distinction

A topic tells readers what you are interested in. A research question tells them exactly what you intend to find out.

Start with a problem, not a preferred method

Begin by describing the situation that deserves investigation. What is not yet understood? Where is practice producing inconsistent outcomes? Which assumption needs closer examination? Try writing the problem in plain language before reaching for technical terms.

At this stage, stay curious. Note the people, settings, processes and outcomes involved. Then ask what kind of knowledge would make the situation clearer. This keeps the question anchored in a real intellectual or practical need rather than in a method you happen to know.

Narrow your focus deliberately

Broad questions become manageable through considered boundaries. You might define a population, a context, a period, a central concept or a relationship between concepts. Every boundary should have a reason: it should sharpen the study without removing what makes the issue important.

Move from broad to focused

Instead of asking “How does technology affect learning?”, identify which technology, whose learning, in what context and which aspect of learning matters. A more focused question might examine how a particular learning tool shapes participation among a defined group in a specific setting.

Test the quality of your question

Read the question as if you were planning the study tomorrow. Can you identify what evidence would be needed? Is the scope realistic? Are the key terms understandable? Does answering it require investigation rather than a simple fact or a yes-or-no response?

  • Clear: The central concepts can be understood without unnecessary ambiguity.
  • Focused: The scope is manageable within the study’s practical limits.
  • Researchable: Relevant evidence can be gathered and analysed ethically.
  • Significant: The answer has a credible reason to matter.
  • Open: The wording allows genuine inquiry rather than assuming the result.

Refine it through reading and discussion

Your first question is a working question. A purposeful review of literature can reveal how others have defined the problem, where knowledge is already strong and where uncertainty remains. Discussion with supervisors, colleagues or practitioners can expose hidden assumptions and practical constraints.

Refinement is not a sign that the original idea failed. It is part of research thinking. Keep a brief record of how the question changes and why; those decisions often become valuable when explaining the study’s rationale.

Practical checklist

Before you proceed, ask:

✓ Can I explain the problem behind this question in two or three sentences?

✓ Are the main concepts clear enough to guide data collection?

✓ Can this question be answered within my time, access and resources?

✓ Does it avoid assuming an outcome before the research begins?

✓ Will the answer add useful understanding to the field or context?
